The Binding Day

The sky had finally opened. A great orange moon hung silently on top of the stage of stars. A cliff jutted above a carpet of dark trees. Two figures stood at the summit and gazed at the panorama above and below them.
Their faces were lit softly by the night’s lights; nature’s cozy blanket embraced them. They had come to this outcropping together, a destination whose path was riddled with swamps, pits, tripping tree roots, and sheer rock faces. The climb had been arduous, but the proud stand above it all merited it.
He extended his hand and she placed her own within it. He pulled her nearer to him, shoulder-to-shoulder, his chin resting on her hair.
They stood silently, each listening to the other’s rhythmic breathing and heart beat. The trees sighed as a mellow gust blew through. She embraced him with her free arm, her forehead resting on his chest. In the ambient light, it looked as though they cried. But both were shaking with laughter.
They had conquered the forest’s obstacles; they had closed the gap between them. Together, they stood above the world. Below them, their tight embrace seemed not a joining of two, but one tall pillar of strength.
