We have a recently renovated, upgraded building with superior athletic facilities, library, science labs, cafeteria and hospitality kitchen. There are expanded computer labs (4) and an increase of the number of computers in the classrooms. We have a tradition of excellence in Leadership, Academics, Arts and Athletics. The St. Lawrence Family of Schools, St. Lawrence Region Media Library, and the St. Lawrence Regional Computer Training Lab are housed within our school.

The Students

We have a diverse population drawn from both rural areas and small towns, representing a full range of needs and abilities. A majority of our graduates go on to post-secondary studies.

The Community

We serve a large geographical area encompassing small towns, villages and farms. We have a broad economic base centred around the agri-industry.

Program
Outline the special programs and innovations which your school provides to students and to the community.

South Grenville offers a number of special programs including our Technology Enriched Classroom. We also enjoy very active community partnerships with local business and a strong Co-operative Education Program. We are a member of the Network of Innovative Schools and have received special funding for four years to build on our resources, enhancing our commitment to Information Technology. We have active student participation in enrichment programs such as Student Exchanges and University Mini Courses. Our technology program is expanding with classes in Construction, Manufacturing, Transportation, Design Technology and Hospitality. This year we offer an Extended French program at South Grenville. History and Geography are also offered in the Extended French Program. We are looking at adding Phys. Ed. To this program for next year. A certificate will be available to all students who complete seven credits in Extended French. South Grenville is one of three schools in Canada which is part of a network to communicate about environmental issues. Schools from around the world are part of this partnership. We are proud of our literacy results which have improved over the past three years. Our community has been very supportive in assisting students with accommodations so they can be as successful as possible on this test. We are proud of our academic students who continue to achieve outstanding results and remain competitive as they vie for positions in university and college programs.

Code of Behaviour
Indicate how the Student Code of Behaviour was developed and your assessment of its effectiveness.

Our code was designed by a committee comprised of teachers, students, the administration and parents. It is reviewed annually by our School Community Advisory Council, administration and staff and is consistent with the Board's Safe School's Policy. The code of behaviour is placed, annually, in the student planner. It is perceived as realistic and practical. Its effectiveness reflects the commitment of all involved to directly address issues. Staff and students are committed to keep our school a safe and secure place to learn, work and develop strong friendships that will last a lifetime. We pride ourselves on our well-maintained building and our safe, school environment. Our school atmosphere is comfortable and welcoming and academically challenging.

School Initiatives
Outline the efforts that the school has made to provide for on-going growth and development of programs and services within the school, i.e., The Growth Plan.

The staff is involved in initiating the beliefs and practices of Professional Learning Communities. We continue to enjoy a strong PAR leadership structure. The administration has encouraged staff to participate in professional development by encouraging attendance at conferences, and by offering learning opportunities at staff meetings and after school. We have continued to update practices in the area of assessment and evaluation. In addition, our Secondary Implementation Team has worked to implement secondary school reform up to Grade 12. Our partnerships include the Ministry of Natural Resources, Kriska Holdings, Grenville Futures Community Development Centre and teacher education partnerships with the University of Ottawa, Nipissing University, Potsdam College and Queen's University.

A smooth transition to high school remains a priority to staff. We arrange visits to our feeder schools and then welcome parents and students to an Information Meeting. Orientation sessions are held in August for students and September for parents.

One of our newest initiatives is the refurbishing of our stage. This project, which was started two years ago, will help to revitalize the arts in our school. A fundraising project will be undertaken to provide some of the needed monies to complete the first stage of this project - the infrastructure.

Community
Outline the strategy that the school employs to encourage parent and community involvement. Comment on the effectiveness of the approach.

We seek to provide an active and inviting forum for our Community Advisory Council. We are responsible to parental inquiries and requests. Communication is fostered through regular newsletters home. Parents are welcome partners in extra-curricular activities, often serving as chaperones or coaches. There are formal and informal partnerships through "Partners in Progress" and Co-op. The administration actively pursues a friendly neighbour policy with business and residents in the area. Our students are involved in numerous community undertakings such as the annual Spirit of Giving, Interact and UNICEF. Giant Fusion, our Student Leadership Group work with the community to assist in various projects such as clean up of the waterfront area and the festivals which happen in the area. Our facilities are well used by the community in the evenings and on weekends.

Administrative Assignments
From time to time the Board will consider the transfer and/or promotion of administrative staff from and to particular schools in a given year. Please provide a response to the following "cues". This information will be helpful to the administration in the development of its recommendation to the Board respecting the assignment of administrative staff to the school.

Leadership Characteristics We value leaders who are understanding and open to community concerns. They need to be effective communicators, willing to consult concerning change. We value leaders' ability to be flexible, responsible, honest, direct and willing to stand behind their decisions. Leaders must be able to make contacts and connections with business and industry. Networking skills are essential!

Communication Skills Leaders should be strong oral and written communicators who are active listeners.

Program Strengths Our leaders should maintain present programs. They should reflect a willingness to share and delegate responsibility (our PAR structure). Leaders should have a broad grasp of program and curriculum issues, promote curriculum leaders and initiate professional development that is accessible to all.

Other Requirements The leader in our school must demonstrate a willingness to foster and take risks; be a role model for students and staff; be fair, firm, visible, responsive and committed to learn; be an advocate for students and parents; have a keen interest in and support extra-curricular activities; be computer literate; and have highly developed skills in human relations.
